I was cruising along and bumped into this site (huge fan of the books!). I was wondering if you might be interested in a spiff of the main page? I'd like to transform the section section into content portals, add an about section, gallery of pics, maybe some vids, and see if there are any other assets from the game that might be interesting. Let me know what you think!
We have a test page that we use to road test other ideas; please feel free to use it.
There are some youtube clips that I've uploaded to the Wiki that might be appropriate to use. At some point, I'd like to look at making our own videos to feature on our front page.
I have access to the Quantcast data for this Wiki, and I've tried to implement a visitor's counter into our CSS/JS, but I don't have the skillset so if you could help out with that too, that'd be super awesome.
I try to publish a report every month so that the contributors can know what our Achievements have been, and to give folks something to focus on for the coming month.
If you have any feedback on what we are doing right and what could be improved, please let me know! I feel like I'm flying blind as it's been really hard to get any feedback from folks on what works and what doesn't.
We've had issues with getting our site to work for mobile devices, but I'm not sure if there is a solution for that as Game Guide and other Wikia Apps seem to ignore our CSS and don't allow images to be overlapped. Of course, if you have any advice as to how we can fix that, that too would be awesome.
So glad to have you hear to help us out in any way you can. Any/all help will be gratefully received.
For an minor example go to this page on your phone and you should see an image popup.
I also found this extension, for Chrome or Firefox, that lets you switch the layout of websites to their mobile ones.... that way you can mess around with the mobile layout right on the PC ... it's called User-Agent Switcher
It seems, complex templates look awful in mobile app anyway no matter how they were made. I think that's a problem of mobile app, not of templates. It can render just simple constructions. Of course we can try to make our templates simpler, but I think browser look will suffer.
Question is: how to place an image over other image to make them look well in mobile app.
As for css styles, I think we should avoid using css for single cases (for example just to make an item card or reward object). It can be done without css, and it looks the same in browser and phone.
Okay so, one of the things I wanted to do was add more background info to characters (just the events that occur before the books & series... nothing spoilery) + help with adding new characters but then I noticed some pages don't follow the template so I tried to fix things but now I'm confused as to what the standard is....
1. Some characters like Lord Dunstan Drumm have links to minor house pages while some other characters don't.... are we adding pages and categories to all minor houses, only certain ones (like freys, bolton), or none at all?
2. Then there are characters like Lord Eddard Stark that have House categories added to them (for ex.. Eddard has the category House Stark listed)... but on that template page there is that list of fealty categories (stags, ironborn, etc..)
sooo should both be used, an alternate (like those born or married into the house should have the tag House whatever and those that swear fealty to a great house should be listed with the other group?) or only one?
3. Also, with some category pages like Category:Agents the main page has a redirect to the character list while others like with Category:Your Children have a redirect page that go to the category page... (Looking at the history it seems like you added the redirect for your children after the one for Agents)
Agh! This has been a major pain for me to try and figure out. I hate having double pages, so I used to set up redirects to the Category pages. However, one aspects I've tried to consider is that the menu for the Game Guides App relies on Category pages to work, but from what I can tell, if there's content on a category page, it can't be viewed in the App. I've been meaning to sit down with my phone/iPad and monitor how the menu works and what works best, but it was a project I lost track of since I lost my laptop.
So, with all that in mind, if you can help me to figure out which way works the best, then we can go with that.
I'm only peeking my head in here because, well characters were the bane of my life a few months ago.
Just my $0.02 but I don't think characters should be called Dragons or Wolves or Kraken or Lions. I think We should use the extra words and make the categories either Sworn to House Stark or Stark Bannermen.
So I was going through the candidates for deletion and before I delete an image, I always check what the file really is named in game. I've come across a few though where the in game name doesn't really make sense. For instance for the Master Furrier, we have Fancy Man Deluxe and the Furrier is Fancy Man. I would rather call them Furrier and maybe Master Furrier. Same thing with the Destrier/Steel-Shod Warhorse. In those situations, what do you think we should do?
So I was looking at the Icons and it gave me an idea. Instead of using individual files for icons why not use image sprites instead? I know how to do it easy enough in css and poking around at other wikis that use image sprites it doesn't look too dificult/different so with some playing around I could probably do it. There could be a sheet for volume icons, quest icons, and whatever else is needed and that could save on a good amount of image space.
You know, I actually love the idea of doing that for all the icons! It would mean that we could use the images as they get pulled from the game, without having to have 3-5 different versions of the same thing.
I love it! How do we make this happen?
I assume that I would need to add something to the CSS for this Wiki. And of course we would need to re-upload the Sprite Versions of each Icon, and delete the superfluous versions.
actually it needs no other code, already implemented something like this in my other wiki (thanks to Majipoor).
what it actually does is make a "window" of fixed size (can have round edges). everything around this window is cropped. the image that is displayed is actually made by positioning the larger image to the left/right/top/bottom.
Its a bit like the following pictures if the area around the yellow squares were cropped:
Actually in Majipoor's way the square stays at the same spot while the background image is positioned relative to it.
I've finally finished categorising the equipment images (hooray) and all that needs to be done is check hand & body item images for duplicates (units & companion images have been checked). I'm going to put off even thinking about the rest so I can go start gathering icons for creating sheets
The only problem is we need them ordered by size and that they'll be exactly side by side without a pixel to spare if we want a template to do the calculations (as opposed to manually doing them for each icon)
I started creating an image with the building upgrades - will add to it and probably reorder them once I'm finished - here is the png
I don't know if that's an issue specific to wikia or it's something else but after googling I found this & this .... I don't know if it'd be applicable to templates, as I've still haven't quite grasped how they work, but maybe it might.
What we did was to use the Facebook Game Feed to find the URL for the Talent and House images. The problem was that some of the images aren't named as they are named in the game, so we had to think sideways and try every combination we could think of.
There is someone I can ask that is more experienced at pulling content than me. Give me a list of what we need and I'll see what they can pull.
I have free time today so I should be able to work on this in a couple hours. ... I'll also rework the icons but, yeah, I only stretched them out since some of the other icons (like the gold ones) were also stretched out so I figured it'd be ok but I'm fine with whatever is preferred... I'll go change them.
oh hey I just realised that I did not originally say thank you when I was given admin priviledges soo thank you :)
I tried to work it out but I can't figure out how to get that calculator thing to work right and looking at the code I'm also not seeing anything that takes into account resizing the icons...
I also tried to see if I could just do it the regular way and on my offsite test the icons show up perfectly how they should when accessed through my iphone but when I tried it on my profile it seems that wikia mobile disables all background info stuff.... and taking into account that overflow:hidden also doesn't work.... honestly I don't know... It seems like this is an issue mainly with wikia mobile and I'm not an expert on css... I can't think of a workaround to get it to work on the phone.... plus who knows what else is disabled?
Regretfully our mobile web implementation doesn't allow any custom css, or js for that fact, to be embedded. This was done for pure performance reasons. As we got a lot of feedback from different communities, that they still like some css features and abilities to customize the mobile web experience, we're currently working on making this happen. We're still in the research phase, so any suggestions and/or feedback are very welcome.
Thanks again for letting us know about the problem.
