"Why do I need a bailiff? What are his responsibilities?"

The man speaks before Maester Lucas can reply. "While the maester reads his books, I will make sure there is plenty of coin on hand."

"As long as the coin goes into my hand and not yours, we ought to do fine."

"Tell me a little of yourself, Simon. Why should I hire you?"

The man frowns. "I have spent years in Oldtown practicing my trade. I have no patience for generous men who never think of themselves."

"I appreciate your honesty, Simon--even if I don't agree. You will be my bailiff."

"If he comes with your recommendation, maester, that's good enough for me. Welcome, Simon."
