When crafting items in Buildings, it is possible to produce a Weapon, Armor and/or Unit of superior quality compared to the standard item. There are Talents, Building Upgrades and Items that can increase the chances of you producing a Superior Item, which are detailed in the relevant sections below.
Some items will have a Prefix to their standard name, while others will have a Suffix. Some players may be lucky enough to produce something that has both a Prefix and a Suffix bonus to the standard item in which case the quality is always Rare or higher.
Lastly, the number of Seal Slots on an item have the potential to adjust based on the new quality of the craft result. For example, a common-quality item that gets upgraded to rare will go from the single locked slot it would have had normally, to three slots (one open and two locked).
You can sometimes find valuable items in the Shop, which can be purchaised with silver. Even when those items have bonuses to increase their quality, the number of seal slots remains the same as that items' standard version. This only applies to improved items bought with silver from Shop.
A common question asked by new players is whether Superior Items provide any benefit when used to craft another item. They do not. They will neither increase your chance of a superior result nor add to your success rate when attempting chance recipes such as Fireship. Only Gems, Talents and Building Upgrades provide such benefits.
One type of Superior Items are those that have a Prefix to their name.
Another type of Superior Items are those that have a Suffix to their name.
The number of locked and unlocked slots available to attach a Seal to on a crafted item depend on the item quality of the final result. If the result is upgraded with both a Prefix and Suffix, the highest rarity of the two is applied to it.
Also note that if you apply a seal to a slot, the slot's gem will feature the quality of the seal that was applied, and not the rarity of the item itself. Thus, you might apply a common seal to a rare item, and you'll see a grey gem on the seal slot and a blue gem on the item quality itself. The chart below indicates the number and type of slots based on quality, as well as the style of gem shown with a seal applied to a slot.
